Senator David Norris is on RTE Radio now throwing his hat into the race for President Of Ireland. First he needs to secure a position as a candidate, then he needs to get elected.
21 years after the hand that rocked the cradle rocked the system, is Ireland ready for President Norris?

He can get a bit excitable. He'd have to temper that.

I think he'd be great. Would it restrict him though. I don't see the country voting for him, TBH.

eh..what?
One says he won't get a candidateship, one means he will be candidate but not elected and one says he will be president?
Am I missing something?

Oh. Well...in 2016 Ireland will celebrate/commemorate 100 years since the the 1916 Easter Rising.
Apparently its going to be quite the shindig...or so we're promised.

With depressing inevitability Bertie Aye-hern is also reportedly shouldering up for the presidential position. Guess which one the thick Irish public will vote for?

Interesting and intelligent as he may be, I don't see Norris elected as President of Ireland, nor do I think he should be. For sure, he will be a chosen candidate, as Bertie unfortunately will (), and as Hookey might too (). But Norris now belongs to the symbolic past fo Ireland, a much needed past which had an amazing, well-needed and positive impact on today's Ireland. But time is such that the country has to look at new effigies. And move on.

I think he would make a great president, he has fought and lived prejudices, hes a good human being, hes not Bertie and he will make Blooms day a national holiday, I am all for extra holidays. So he will get my vote.

I'd like to agree but the fact that he's gay would be cool. If the new effigy then is gay then grand, I will support them.
