Dublin has been recently voted one of the friendliest, but also one of the most boring and badly dressed cities.
Whether you're a Dub or not, do you think Dublin is 'boring'?

The badly dressed doesn't part surprise me in a city where sportswear reigns supreme. Friendly? I suppose. Boring - maybe?

Dublin reminds me of Oslo - another rather unaesthetic and boring city (which I don't dislike all the same).

Dublin voted friendliest capital – but so over-rated and boring
By Seán McCárthaigh
MONDAY, MAY 04, 2009

IF you’re a Munster rugby fan who’s just been subjected to a weekend of taunts by the natives you might not agree, but Dublin has been voted the friendliest European city.

But tourism bosses might not be ready to bask in any glory just yet as Dublin was also named as the third-most boring European capital after Brussels and Zurich, while also coming third in the title for most over-rated capital, and second for worst-dressed.

It is the second year in a row that the Irish capital has been voted Europe’s most welcoming city in a survey by the travel advice website, Tripadvisor.

Dublin emerged as Europe’s city of the welcomes in the survey of more than 2,300 European travellers, with 15% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Amsterdam with Edinburgh a distant third.

"Dublin is well worth a visit – the locals were so warm and friendly and made me so welcome," said one visitor in a review that must have Fáilte Ireland executives purring after recent years when doubts were being cast increasingly over our long-held friendly reputation.

Dubliners shared the dubious honour of the second worst-dressed metropolitans in Europe with Muscovites, but the ignominy of worst-dressed was saved for Londoners.

Not surprisingly, chic Parisians scooped the title as the most fashionable capital citizens followed closely by Romans and Madrileños.

However, Cockneys still had reasons to be cheerful as London topped the poll for best free attractions, best nightlife and best public parks. The English capital also earned less desirable tags as Europe’s most expensive and dirtiest city.

So the message is Dublin for the craic – not the couture.

I don't think Dublin is boring, its compact it has a centre you are always 15 minutes to a park, 30 minutes from a beach and 40 minutes to the mountain. Its pubs and entertainment is sufficient and is varied enough, it has interesting sites, interesting area, its relatively safe. My criticism would be its organisation is a bit of a traffic mess and we dubs are mankey.

Yeah you know what I mean the litter the chewing gum cig butts etc.

But Dub has a good gay and straight scene a good theatre scene, it attracts all the big artists. I think for a small city it packs a lot and the visitors I talk to seem to love it and always come back.

No of course it's not boring. It's comatose. It's going through the last stages of rigor mortis. It's at the precise moment in its metropolitan history that's roughly analogous to the point where dogshit turns white. There's no fun anymore. No joie de vivre. Dublin in 2010 has all the zeitgeist of post-war Grozny.

I find this a difficult question to answer. Like many I probably don't make the best of living in Dublin and so probably am not in the best position to judge but I can't help feeling that I have enjoyed similar sized cities more - like Barcelona, Vienna and Budapest.

I don't think Dublin is boring at all. Every week there are so many events going on there's always something to do...

I reckon it's the tourists that are boring! My Grandmother used to always say that only boring people get bored and I think that's very true...

I actually agree with that to a large degree. However, when compared with other cities of a similar size, it's comparatively boring IMO. I think one reason might be the layout of Dublin: it's so spread out and low-density, giving it less of a core critical mass.

It's very dull and boring looking but I don't agree that's boring. There's loads of events going on and a very young population. It has a lot going for it. And since I moved to Mayo it looks like a veritable metropolis to me!

What you need is a house in Dublin, a house in Brusels and a house in Castlebar.
