The rambles of a Deafie.

Her name is Mary Margaret Dunne.

10 March 2010, 14:03

Mary Margaret Dunne, (83) affectionately known as 'Mad Mary', or "The Dancing Lady of O'Connell Street" has grabbed the affections of Dubliners as she sang, danced and preached on her pitch on O'Connell Street for over thirty years.

I remember being mesmerised by her. There was this otherworldly aura about her.

She was truly a role model, we all should learn from her. Not to mind the opinions of others and do what we think is best. Religion was what she was all about, but it doesn't have to be about religion. The real issue is... We could stop worrying about what other people think.

She is one of the last Old Dublin characters still alive.

There was a Facebook fan page with 15,000 members, interested in the whereabouts of Mary Margaret Dunne, and on Sunday 7th March 2010, some of us met on O'Connell Street as a tribute to her.

Here's a short vlog I made on it. (Just turn on the annotations, and hope the sound is ok.)

Here's to you, Mary Margaret Dunne.

She's alive and well, albeit a bit frail, at the ripe old age of 83, and living in Deansgrange with her son.

She WAS very attractive in her heyday. It's the otherworldly aura about her, and she was also very glamorous.

Oh yes, she is notorious for standing up at Masses, shouting at the priest during the sermon if she thought the priest was doing it wrong.

She was truly a role model,

Are you off your head Intrepid? She was a 'role model'...

Yeh right, I think we should all dance around O'Connell street waving our arms and spouting guy in the sky nonsense.

@ Perry, yes, she was definitely a role model. Not in the sense of prancing aorund and singing to the heavens. In the sense of having a supreme disregard for 'doing what is perceived as the correct thing to do, even if it makes you unhappy.'

@ Ice... ooo, bold!!
